Crèches, after-school care facilities, nurseries and other childcare provisions require a completely different approach to cleaning.
We live in a cloud of microscopic particles. These particles come from our clothing, our skin, and airborne dust particles. Children are surrounded by up to four times as many particles than are present in other areas of the room. This is because they are smaller (most particles float close to the ground at a height of 30cm or less) and because they are more active (which releases more particles into the air). These particles contain many health hazards, such as endotoxins (toxins produced by bacteria), allergens (pet allergies, dust mites), fungi, damp and bacteria. It is very difficult to prevent this, as we carry them around in this cloud of particles all day.
Killing bacteria and dust mites does not eliminate the problem as it often causes unstable toxic residues. These toxic substances are very difficult to break down, and they can quickly build up in areas more prone to accumulating particles. Only regular and high-quality cleaning can make the difference!!
By cleaning in a thorough yet healthy way, less particles are inhaled. This is the basis of our Healthy Cleaning method, which is in compliance with VSR & TNO standards.
We employ five rules of thumb:
- Clean the most important things: Ensure that the hot spots receive particular attention: in childcare, that means the floor, the toilets, the doors and low-level furnishings.
- Clean thoroughly: Use products that prevent the release of airborne particles, such as dust-adhesive gauze, the green-speed method, vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters etc.
- Clean as dry as possible: Micro-organisms and dust mites need fluid to grow and to create toxins and allergens. You should therefore minimise the use of liquids. The green-speed method is highly suited to this objective as it is based on damp cleaning (very quick drying time) and makes use of high-quality materials (microfibres). The cloths used must be washed after use.
- Take your time: the faster you work, the more particles are released into the air. Once airborne, particles cannot immediately be removed.
- Clean regularly: cleanliness has a limited lifespan. The floor and the toilets in particular must be cleaned every day.
FVH’s maintenance programme for childcare facilities is based on the Childcare Provisions Act (Wet Kinderopvang) and all corresponding HIRAs and health & safety regulations, which ensure the quality of childcare facilities. FVH can also provide other services such as central goods supply and building maintenance (including paintwork, technical services and gardening). In short, we care for the building so you can care for the children!!
